Traffic Johnson City Traffic Management System The Johnson City Traffic Engineering Department has established a Traffic Management Center to coordinate traffic control and incident management services in the Johnson City region. The system is based on the ACTRA (Siemens Energy and Automation), software. This software allows an operator to automatically adjust traffic signal timing, track traffic volumes, add a video interface, schedule maintenance, and monitor signal reliability. ACTRA transmits signal systems data through real-time communications linkages direct to the control center. Operators use the system to introduce cost efficiencies in maintaining signals and in ensuring optimal traffic flow. The signal system will be augmented by additional features including safety cameras for accident monitoring in the future.
Johnson City is implementing the signal system in three separate interconnected systems. The operation of the system is integrated with the design for the Johnson City ITS Med-Tech Corridor Project, in conformance with the ITS Regional Architecture developed by the MPO. Video cameras for traffic signal management were installed at the West Market Street (US 11E) State of Franklin Road intersection in January, 2000. The overall traffic management system will be linked via a fiber optics network with a control center at the Traffic Engineering Office on Water Street.
